If it is an integrated modem (built into the motherboard) go to the compaq site,
search your deskpro model ( ser # should be on the back) and download the driver
setup files. (Make sure that the moden is 'turned on' in the setup
first.)
If it is not, try drivers.com, you can often pick up drivers by
searching chip #s or model #s
If you still have no luck a new moden is
about $35 to $40 CDN.

Answer:
Harddrives are inexpensive these days and your friend should
consider buying a new harddrive. You can get an 8gb harddrive for about $100.
But if that is not possible then to free up some harddrive space do this if you
haven't already:
1) Right click on the Recycle Bin and click on
Properties. Move the slider to the left untill you get 1% then click Apply then
OK. That will set the Recycle Bin to 6mb which should be enough. The Recycle Bin
is probably set at the default setting which is 5% or 10% which would be 30mb to
60mb. With the 1% setting you will gain about 24mb to 54mb of harddrive
space.
2) Check the Windows/Temporary Internet Files folder. If there are
files in this folder delete them. They are of no use.
3) Check the
Windows/Cookies folder. If this folder contains any cookie files delete them or
delete the ones that are not wanted. Do NOT DELETE the INDEX.DAT file!
4)
Check the Windows/History folder. If there are any files delete them. Again they
are of no important use.
5) Check the Windows/Fonts folder. If the Fonts
folder contains more than 100 fonts than there are too many. The less fonts
there are the faster Windows will run. Delete any unwanted Fonts. BE CAREFUL! DO
NOT DELETE ANY FONTS THAT WINDOWS NEEDS! To find out go to the Windows folder
and look at the date of the Windows (.exe) files such as Fontview.exe ,
Freecell.exe , Notepad.exe , Regedit.exe etc. and take note of the date of these
files and write it down. Now go back to the Fonts folder and delete some fonts
that don't have the same date as the Windows (exe) files. Remember BE CAREFUL!
(eg: The date for Windows 98se (exe) files are 4/23/99.) Disclaimer: If you
follow this tip you do so at your own risk! I accept no responsibility for your
actions.
6) Check the Windows/Temp folder. If there are files in this
folder delete them along with their folders if any but NOT THE TEMP
FOLDER.
7) Uninstall any programs that aren't needed or
wanted.
Before you install Office 2000 you need to take into
consideration the speed of your friends computer. Since it has a 602mb harddrive
I have reason to believe that the computer is too old and slow to run Office
2000 efficiently. Look at the Office 2000 minimum system requirements such as
memory (ram), harddrive space (which you have already discovered is not enough)
and cpu and then decide if you should install it.
NOTE: Windows should
have a minimum of 5mb to 10mb of harddrive space and preferably more to run
properly. It needs this space for the swap file (virtual memmory) When all of
the installed ram is being used Windows needs the harddrive space to swap out
instructions to, while running a program or programs.
Good Luck!

The REAL answer is:
Don't use Word2000 on a computer that old!
Office
typically uses 500 MB to install which is NOT going to happen on a drive that is
650MB.
